The Rise of Drone Photography

Here at V-Mark Design we use drones to film and photograph real estate for our clients. This footage really gives the property owner a competitive edge, showcasing assets that wouldn’t otherwise be visible. While drones are certainly useful in real estate photography, they’re in fact being used for a wide variety of purposes including historical comparison photography, land mapping, emergency management and, of course, marketing.

Tourism photography of Australia’s many natural wonders has never been more impressive. Earlier this year Tourism Australia, in conjunction with aerial photography online community SkyPixel and drone manufacturer DJI, ran the ‘Australia From Above’ competition. The goal was to gain 1200 entries from aerial photography enthusiasts, however more than 6000 entries were received demonstrating an ever-growing interest in aerial photography. Entries were received from Australians as well as photographers from all over the world, showcasing our best sights to an international market from an angle not often seen! The winner, Kyle Bowman’s shot of Wyadup Spa (below) in Western Australia is nothing short of spectacular.

While Sydney’s attractions did not take out any of the top prizes, some unique and truly artistic photos showcasing the beauty of New South Wales did make the shortlist. An aerial photograph of harvest in southern New South Wales rated highly, as did an image of West Wyalong. And of course no Australian Tourism Competition would be complete without a shot of the iconic Bondi Beach.

SkyPixel, Tourism Australia’s partner for the ‘Australia from Above’ competition, totes itself as the world’s biggest drone photo and video sharing platform. A quick search for Sydney returns more than one thousand videos and over 400 photographs, all shot from above. Recognisable landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour and the Sydney city centre feature heavily on Skypixel however other sights from the wider Sydney are also being captured and shared. Gorgeous photos and videos of the Sydney headlands, Narrabean Lakes, Coogee Beach, Double Bay and the Royal National Park present Sydney as a great place to live, work and play.

With that in mind it is easy to understand the appeal of drone photography and video to real estate agents. Drones give agents the ability to demonstrate the features of a property including the building, gardens, views and surrounding assets such as beaches and parklands.
